TOLPUDDLE will be my latest book to be published by Ravenswood Publishing (NC, USA) in the New Year. It is the story of the "Tolpuddle Martyrs" who fought against the government in 1834 in order to set up a union for agricultural labourers in 1834. The government transported them to Australia for 7 years, but due to the noise, opposition and petitions, they were brought back to to England within 5 years. Of the six "martyrs," five then moved on to Canada where some of them fulfilled important civic roles.
This is the true story of a band of dedicated men from the tiny Dorsetshire village of Tolpuddle who fought the authorities to gain the freedom to establish trade unions in England against the opposition of the landed and moneyed classes. In order to do so, they suffered transportation and imprisonment, but none of this quashed their desire to obtain their goals.
